Happy Thursday, Families! We have a busy and exciting day ahead of us tomorrow. Please read below for important updates regarding the weather and our awards schedule.

❄️ Bundle Up! Cold Weather Alert Tomorrow will be a chilly day!

Dress Warmly: As temperatures begin to drop, please help your child come to school dressed for colder weather. This includes jackets which will be especially chilly, layers, hats, and gloves as needed.
Label Everything: Please write your child's name inside their jacket and on their items. Students often take them off once inside, and labeling helps us return lost items!
Students will continue to participate in outdoor activities when weather permits, so being dressed appropriately helps them stay comfortable, focused, and ready to learn throughout the day.

🏆 2nd Quarter Awards We are excited to celebrate our students' hard work!

Invites: Invitations have been sent home by teachers to families of award recipients.

Arrival: If you are attending, please arrive early to allow time for check-in at the front office. Teachers shared your child's awards time.

ID Required: Please remember to bring your valid photo ID to sign in to help make the process run smoothly.

📅 Calendar Note There is NO SCHOOL this coming Monday, January 19th, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Our Avon Elementary Dolphins had an absolute blast last Friday at the Holiday Dolphin Store! 🎉 They got to spend their hard-earned Dolphin Dollars on so many cute and fun treats and treasures. We are so proud of their hard work this quarter!

We are incredibly appreciative of all the generous donations that made the store such a success. A special shout-out goes to CMBCollectibles for donating some really cool stuff from their store! 🎁

This year, Avon Elementary School proudly celebrates 70 incredible years of learning, community, and Dolphin pride. Since opening our doors in 1955, AES has grown, changed, and thrived. A few weeks ago, we honored that legacy in the best way possible!

We kicked off the day with a school-wide pep rally, filled with energy, smiles, and lots of friendly competition. Our students got to play games, learn fun facts about our school’s history, and see how Avon has transformed over the decades. Some of our teachers and students even showed up dressed to represent the '50s through today — and they showed out! 🕺📚✨

Later that evening, we continued the celebration with our families, staff, and community members for a night we’ll never forget. 💙

🌟 Special highlights from the evening included:
🥁 The APHS Drumline and Color Guard welcoming guests with an unforgettable entrance!
🎤 A beautiful performance by the APHS Women’s Choir
🤝 Our amazing Student Leadership Team greeting guests and helping host the event
🎓 A recognition of the wonderful former AES administrators who helped shape our school’s story

It was a night filled with pride, nostalgia, laughter, and love for a school that has meant so much to so many.

We're thrilled to join the Florida Department of Education in celebrating Gifted Education Week! The Florida Department of Education has officially designated November 3-7, 2025, as Gifted Education Week in Florida! This is a fantastic time to recognize Florida's commitment to providing rigorous educational experiences and tailored support for our advanced learners.

Here in Highlands County, we are celebrating the incredible achievements and innovative spirit of our students. Our elementary gifted students have been exploring this year's hands-on curriculum, "The Carnival of Creativity."

Building Skills for the Future
Our students are engaging in hands-on, collaborative projects that focus on their intellectual growth and the development of critical academic skills:

STEAM & Design Challenges: Students are tackling real-world, carnival-themed STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) challenges. They are applying the engineering design process and using math and science concepts to create a variety of products.

Building Resilience: A key focus is on developing perseverance and a growth mindset. These challenges are intentionally complex, giving students a safe space to practice problem-solving, learn from setbacks, and build grit.

Innovation and Leadership: Through teamwork, students are honing their critical and creative thinking abilities, practicing leadership skills, and developing real-world problem-solving strategies.
